The Self-care Sunday You Need, Post Decemberistan

Winter in Pakistan is an onslaught of never-ending weddings and events that may add recreation to our lives but definitely devoid us of any kind of relaxation. ‘Decemberistan’ is perhaps the most awaited, as well as the most aggravating, time of the year where one has to be prepped for a month of nonstop revelry, with friends and family flying in from all over the world and everyone and their kin getting hitched in the most ostentatious ways possible. Add Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations to the mix and you’ll officially enter the new year weighed down and weary after all that merry making.

What we need in the start of this new year, beyond blessings and resolutions, is some serious self-care to recharge our batteries. So coming Sunday, or any day of your choice really, prepare to pamper yourself with the little things in life that won’t break the bank but definitely will break you out of a clogged mind, body and soul cycle. Here’s a list of Sunday Self-care essentials you need to relax and realign yourself.

  • Scented Candles

Lighting a scented candle in your room is the easiest way to create a relaxing environment, especially if you get the aroma therapy variety. Remember to buy soy wax candles that are naturally scented with essential oils. Soy candles are the healthier choice as they burn cleaner and release 90 percent less soot than paraffin candles. Check out our favourite ones to buy locally.

  • Essential Oils

One of the most effective ways to heal and soothe your senses, essential oils are labelled essential for a reason. The right choice of essential oil will help ease anxiety, make you sleep better and give you a boost of strength and energy; basically you name the obstacle and an essential oil is there to save the day. The most commonly used essential oils, for calmness and anxiety relief, include lavender, bergamot, frankincense, clary sage, rose, lemongrass and peppermint. Lavender, clary sage and bergamot are also good sedatives to help improve our sleep cycle. Most essential oils will come with a label that reads its healing properties so it’s easy to pick and choose oils for your concern.

  • Face masks

Even if it actually doesn’t do anything to your skin, a face mask definitely feels like it’s doing something to your skin. I’m not one to doubt the utility of a placebo effect. But this does not mean all face masks are made equally; here are a few of our favourite picks that will definitely show results, and not just in your head.

  • Healing Crystals

Crystal healing may be considered a pseudoscience but you won’t know how effective it can be until you try it. The therapy involves placing crystals on your body that draw out negative energy; though the method may not be scientifically proven, there is empirical evidence of it having real therapeutic effects. Anyway holding a crystal in your hand has no side effects so giving it a try won’t hurt. There are many crystals that can aid self-care practices but crystals are known to work differently for every individual, so it’s best to use your intuition in choosing the right one or you can ask an expert. Some of the more popular ones for harmony, positivity and general calm include clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, tiger’s eye and moonstone.

  • Listen to Relaxing Music

Do not think you have to listen to classical music and healing sonatas to get the dopamine flowing and reinvigorate your mind. The right kind of millennial music will equally do the trick. Did you know that that Pure Shores by All Saints is scientifically proven to be one of the most relaxing songs in the world? Here are some of the top feel-good songs on the Team Libas playlist.
