Getting to know Mirza Zain Baig

Emerging talent Mirza Zain Baig has been making waves on TV screens with his recent dramas Dil-e-Ghumshuda and Malal-e-Yaar. The audience fell in love with his dramas, turning him into a household name. Libas Now in an exclusive interview with the emerging talent talk about his characters, Mirza Zain Baig as an actor and so much more.

1. Who is Mirza Baig in three words?

Hardworking, Passionate and a workaholic.

2. What inspired your fondness towards acting?

Being a CA by profession, I was working with an FMCG. After meeting a few veterans in the industry including Adnan Siddiqui and Humayun Saeed they insisted that I take up an acting gig, especially because of my voice. Nadeem Baig offered me a role when he was directing Dillagi for ARY. I took that up and the rest, as they say, is history.

3. How do you think nepotism affects new and fresh talent to make a mark in the industry?

Well, that’s the case everywhere. Nepotism does affect things in any industry one can think of. You have to keep trying and never give up. It’s part and parcel of the game. Having said that, I am sure a lot of talent in our industry might have been disregarded and this might keep happening, but if you are good at what you do, you will make it through, eventually.

4. Are you interested in taking up storylines associated with social causes? If yes, what social issue would you be interested in highlighting?

I would like to take up characters that advocate for women empowerment/women’s rights. Living in a patriarchal society, I think it is very important to do so. Although things are changing in the industry, we have dramas highlighting child molestation and other issues, there is still a long way to go and I think this is the best time to do so.

5. What is your biggest goal for 2020?

Being able to go on a vacation and travel more. Last I travelled was in 2017 to Turkey. This time I want to go to London and Greece.

6. How has acting changed your lifestyle?

I have become more sensitive towards relationships. I have also learnt how to value these relationships and at the same being able to control my anger. I was very hot-headed, but with acting, it has decreased with time.

7. Do you have any habits that irk your co-stars?

I don’t know about that. I can tell you what habits irk me, which are; not being on time and coming in with a mood that ruins the entire workspace; thus, causing hindrance in shooting for that particular day.

8. What are you most known for amongst your friends?

I am very punctual when it comes to professional commitments. However, I am usually the last one to arrive at family/friends gathering, so it has to be that. I am the sort of person who will say that I am five minutes away when I am actually sitting at home.

9. What do you do when you are not acting?

I like to work out so it’s either that or playing cricket with my friends, because that’s the only sport I enjoy.

10. Your recent characters in Malal e Yaar and Dil e Ghumshuda were very different from each other - what made you take up these roles and what did you enjoy most about each character?

Both the characters were very different from each other. With Dil-e-Ghumshuda, I liked the wavelength of the character. From being a subtly greedy person to someone who changes for the good after realising that the family pressures were heading in the wrong direction. Before signing up, I read the script till the 8th episode and I knew I wanted to do this role.

With Malal-e-Yaar, the entire storyline and character were pretty interesting. Both the dramas aired at the same time, so the shooting process was a little challenging.

11. Any upcoming projects that you are working on?

I am currently shooting for the new season of Khuda Aur Mohabbat. We have completed a few spells in Bahawalpur and Lahore. I am going to start shooting for two dramas in the coming months. One is with 7th Sky Entertainment called Fitrat and another one for Hum TV called Jallan.

She is awesome. She can write all day long. She is a true champion.
